Database Definitions for Lyris ListManager

ListManager is compatible with several different relational database applications. Below, we explain a bit more about Microsoft MSDE and PostgreSQL, two databases that are available at no cost. (ListManager is also compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Oracle 9.2.0.1/10.1.0.2, both of which require a fee from their respective developers.)

Microsoft MSDE

We offer ListManager on Windows with a bundled version of Microsoft Database Engine (MSDE). This fully-featured database server runs on Windows and is equivalent in performance to a 25-user license of Microsoft's commercially-available database application SQL Server. MSDE is built by Microsoft using the same backend as their SQL Server product, but it does not include SQL Server's graphical user interface (GUI). MSDE also has a 2GB limit on its database size. Our testing indicates this will hold more than 4 million list members, although actual member capacity will depend on the quantity of data stored in the other tables (for example, the size of your message archives). Users who outgrow MSDE can easily migrate to Microsoft SQL Server, which has no size constraints. Microsoft has allowed us to bundle MSDE with ListManager at no additional cost to you. We have found that, with the exception of the 2GB limit and the lack of a user interface, MSDE is largely equivalent to the version of Microsoft SQL Server you would otherwise need to purchase.

PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is a full-featured database server that runs on Linux and is available at no cost. PostgreSQL can scale to a database of approximately one million members, and is therefore appropriate for our Silver through Platinum Plus license levels. If you plan to use a Diamond or Extreme license, please contact us [/contact/listmanager.html] to discuss alternative databases.

Many versions of Linux include an RPM for Postgres on the Linux CD-ROM. You can download the latest Linux RPM or build from the Postgres source code, available at no cost from PostgreSQL.org.

Note that the default configuration files for PostgreSQL are set up for very small databases, and minimal memory usage, so that even Pentium-100 machines with 4MB of RAM will work. These defaults are not appropriate for PostgreSQL being used by ListManager. We will be posting specific guidelines here in the future, and recommend that all ListManager sites running PostgreSQL read this tuning document.

ListManager is compatible with different versions of PostgreSQL, per the following table:

ListManager version

PostgreSQL version

 List Manager 9.3  PostgreSQL 8.2.3
 List Manager 9.2  PostgreSQL 8.2.1
 List Manager 9.1  PostgreSQL 8.1.4

 ListManager 8.8

 PostgreSQL 8.0.3

 ListManager 8.5

 PostgreSQL 8.0.1

 ListManager 8.0-8.1

 PostgreSQL 7.4.7

 ListManager 7.5-7.8

 PostgreSQL 7.3.2

 ListManager 5.x, 6.x, 7.0

 PostgreSQL 7.1.3

How to get PostgreSQL

You can obtain PostgreSQL for Linux in several ways:

  • Install the version that was included with your copy of Linux. Many versions of Linux include an RPM for Postgres on the Linux CD-ROM.
  • Download the latest Linux RPM free from the PostgreSQL Web site.
  • Build it from the source code, available at no cost from PostgreSQL.org. This process will take about 15 minutes with our instructions, or you can follow the PostgreSQL adminstrator's guide instructions.
  • Buy a commercial release. Red Hat, for example, offers a supported, commercial version of PostgresSQL.
